Surface Mounting Technology (SMT)

Support Heading

At Masters & Young, we offer advanced surface mounting technology solutions as part of our in-house electronics manufacturing services. Using high-speed, high-precision SMT production lines, we deliver consistent, high-quality results for clients across defence, medical, industrial, and consumer electronics sectors.

With decades of experience and ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D certifications, we ensure your PCB designs are assembled efficiently and to the highest standard, right here in our Brisbane-based facility.

What Is SMT Surface Mount Technology?

Sub heading sits right here

SMT surface mount technology is the process of placing and soldering components directly onto the surface of a printed circuit board (PCB). Unlike traditional through-hole assembly, SMT allows for:

  • Smaller, more compact designs
  • Faster automated placement
  • Greater component density
  • Improved performance and signal integrity

Our SMT capabilities allow us to assemble everything from small prototype runs to full production volumes with precision and repeatability.

Our Smt Capabilities

Our SMT Capabilities

We operate advanced, fully automated SMT lines that support a wide range of board types and component sizes, including fine-pitch and leadless devices like BGAs and QFNs.We operate advanced, fully automated SMT lines that support a wide range of board types and component sizes, including fine-pitch and leadless devices such as BGAs (Ball Grid Arrays), which have solder balls underneath for connections, and QFNs (Quad Flat No-lead), which are compact packages with terminals on the underside.

Our SMT services include:

  • Single and double-sided assembly
  • Placement of 01005 components and up
  • Fine-pitch, BGA, and microcontroller placement
  • Solder paste application and reflow soldering
  • Inline inspection and quality control
  • Flexible support for both prototype and high-volume projects

All assembly takes place in a controlled environment, ensuring product reliability and long-term performance in critical applications.

Industry Applications

Our surface mounting technology services are trusted across high-reliability sectors that demand precision and performance, including:

  • Defence and Aerospace: Rugged boards for advanced systems
  • Medical Devices: Accurate and compact assemblies
  • Mining: Durable electronics designed to withstand harsh environments and heavy operational loads
  • Renewables: High-efficiency circuit boards for solar, wind, and battery energy systems
  • Industrial Equipment: Reliable, high-cycle PCBs
  • Consumer Electronics: Scalable production for commercial markets

Whether you’re developing a compact wearable or a complex control module, we have the experience and systems to meet your requirements.

Quality You Can Depend On

Masters & Young is committed to delivering consistent quality through every stage of production. We adhere to IPC Class 2 and Class 3 standards depending on project requirements and carry out extensive testing on all assembled boards.

Quality control measures include:

  • Automated Optical Inspection (AOI)
  • Flying Probe Testing
  • Functional Testing
  • X-ray inspection for hidden solder joints

Our SMT production lines are overseen by skilled technicians and engineers who bring decades of electronics manufacturing knowledge to each job.

FAQs

1. What is surface mounting technology?

Surface mounting technology (SMT) is a method of assembling electronic components directly onto the surface of a PCB. It allows for compact, high-performance designs and automated production.

Through-hole components are inserted into holes and soldered on the opposite side, while SMT components are placed on the board’s surface. SMT is generally faster, more compact, and suitable for high-volume production.

We support a wide range of components, including 01005 packages, BGAs, QFNs, fine-pitch ICs, and other miniature or leadless devices.

Yes. Masters & Young supports both low-volume prototyping and full-scale production using our in-house SMT lines.

All assemblies are tested using AOI, flying probe, functional tests and X-ray inspection. We build to IPC Class 2 or Class 3 standards, and our facility is ISO 9001:2015 certified.
